Would you like to take the telc B2 exam and are looking for information about the exam process, the individual sections of the exam, and how to prepare properly? The telc German B2 exam certifies German language proficiency at the B2 level and assesses the four skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

In this post, you’ll learn how the telc B2 exam works, what types of tasks you can expect, and how you can prepare specifically for the exam.

Structure of the telc German B2 ExamWhat Does B2 Level Mean?

B2 is an advanced language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Learners who have mastered German at the B2 level can communicate spontaneously and with relative fluency. They can also understand more complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. In addition, learners can express their opinions on various topics clearly and in detail and explain the pros and cons of different options.

The B2 certificate may be relevant, for example , for professional purposes, academic studies, or other personal and institutional requirements. However, you should always check with the respective institution to see which certificates are accepted for a specific purpose.

How is the telc B2 exam structured?

The telc German B2 exam consists of a written and an oral section. The exam assesses reading, language structures, listening, writing, and speaking.

Written Examination

The written portion consists of three sections:

1. Reading Comprehension and Language Elements

Here, you’ll work on various reading exercises as well as grammar and vocabulary exercises. The reading comprehension section tests, among other things, global, detailed, and selective reading.

A total of 90 minutes is allotted for reading comprehension and language building blocks.

2. Listening Comprehension

Listening comprehension involves identifying main ideas, details, and specific information from spoken German.

About 20 minutes are allotted for this.

3. Writing

For the writing task, you will compose a semi-formal email. It is important to complete the task in full, write clearly, and formulate your ideas appropriately in terms of language and structure. You have 30 minutes to complete this task.

The written exam thus lasts a total of about 140 minutes and is administered without a break.

How does the telc B2 oral exam work?

The oral exam lasts about 15 minutes. It usually takes place with one other person. You will have 20 minutes to prepare before the exam.

The oral examination consists of three parts:

1. Talking About Experiences

You’ll talk about a given topic or your own experiences.

2. Discussion

You’ll discuss a topic with your exam partner and share your own opinion.

3. Plan something together

You work together to develop a solution or make plans. The most important thing is to actively talk to one another, make suggestions, respond to them, and work together to find a solution.

Tip: For the oral exam, it’s not enough to just learn grammar rules. You should speak regularly and practice expressing your opinion spontaneously and responding to others in conversation.

How can you prepare for the telc B2 exam?

Effective preparation for the telc B2 exam combines language training with targeted exam practice. After all, you should not only be able to speak German at the B2 level, but also be familiar with the types of tasks and the time constraints.

1. Understand the exam format

Find out exactly what tasks you can expect in each part of the exam. That way, you can use your study time effectively.

telc provides official practice tests and exam preparation materials for this purpose. Among other things, they outline the exam procedure, question formats, time limits, and grading criteria.

2. Practice time management

Time is an important factor in the telc B2 exam. Especially for the reading and writing sections, you should practice beforehand to determine how much time you need for each task.

You have a total of 90 minutes for the reading comprehension and language components. Be sure to set aside time to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

3. Read German texts regularly

Newspapers, magazines, websites, and other authentic texts can help you expand your vocabulary and become familiar with different writing styles.

Practice different types of reading: Start by skimming a text to grasp the main idea. Then look for specific information and read important passages carefully.

4. Listen to as much German as possible

Podcasts, news reports, interviews, and conversations are great ways to practice your listening comprehension.

Try not to worry about understanding every single word. Focus first on the main point and the important information.

5. Practice writing

When it comes to writing, you should practice writing regularly under realistic conditions.

Pay special attention to the following:

to complete the assignment in its entirety,

to organize your thoughts clearly,

to use appropriate wording,

to pay attention to grammar and word choice,

Make sure to set aside enough time for a quick check.

The official telc preparation guide describes writing a semi-formal email as an exam task.

6. Speak German regularly

For the oral exam, speaking regularly is especially important.

For example, practice:

to express your opinion on a topic,

To give reasons,

to respond to counterarguments,

To make suggestions,

to make decisions together.

This way, you’ll practice exactly the communication skills required for the oral exam.

7. Run complete model tests

Taking a full-length telc B2 practice exam under realistic conditions will help you assess your current level.

Time yourself and work through the problems just as you would in the actual test. Afterward, you can analyze where you’re still having trouble.

Official telc practice tests include complete test sets with answers and information on the exam format and grading criteria.

telc B2 Exam: Preparation Is More Than Just Grammar

Successful preparation doesn’t mean memorizing as many grammar rules as possible. What matters most is a combination of language skills, test preparation, and practical application.

That’s why you should practice all four skills regularly:

Reading + Listening + Writing + Speaking

The more familiar you are with the exam format, the easier it will be for you to apply your existing German language skills during the exam.

telc B2 Exam in Frankfurt

Would you like to take the telc B2 exam in Frankfurt or prepare specifically for it?

A language school can help you assess your current language proficiency and work specifically toward meeting the exam’s requirements.

It is particularly helpful when a B2 German course and exam preparation are coordinated. A placement test can also help determine whether your German skills are already sufficient for a B2 exam or whether you first need more practice with the language.

Conclusion: How to Prepare for the telc B2 Exam

The telc German B2 exam assesses your skills in reading, language structures, listening, writing, and speaking. Therefore, effective preparation involves studying German regularly, targeted practice for each section of the exam, and as many practice exercises as possible under realistic exam conditions.

Our tip: Find out the exam date well in advance and plan your preparation working backward from that date. That way, you’ll know how much time you have for language training, exam practice, and practice tests.

Are you new to Germany and looking for a German course in Frankfurt that fits your daily life and personal goals? Then the question quickly arises: Should you take an intensive German course or an evening course you can attend while working?

The right type of course depends primarily on how quickly you want to learn German, how much time you have available, and what your goal is. We’ll show you what to look for when making your choice.

Intensive German Course: Reach Your Next Language Goal Quickly

Do you want to learn German as quickly as possible and have a specific goal in mind? Then an intensive German course in Frankfurt might be the right solution for you.

Perhaps you need to reach a certain language proficiency level for your visa, to pursue a degree, or to get a new job. If you want to achieve your goal within a specific time frame, an intensive course gives you the opportunity to focus particularly intensively on the German language over the course of several weeks or months.

Classes are usually held regularly in the morning. You’ll learn in a small group with other participants at a similar language level, allowing you to focus entirely on your language development.

An intensive course is right for you if you:

want to quickly reach a certain level of German proficiency,

have a specific goal or a set deadline,

you have time to study in the morning,

enjoy learning regularly and intensively,

You need German for school, work, or a visa.

The big advantage: Thanks to the intensive learning approach, you can continuously build your German skills and regularly put what you’ve learned into practice.

Evening German Class: Learn German While Working

Do you work full-time but still want to improve your German skills? Then an evening German course you can take while working is a great way to incorporate learning German into your daily routine.

Classes are held at set times, making it easier to balance them with work, family, and other commitments. At the same time, you’ll learn continuously in a small group and can apply what you’ve learned right away.

An evening class is right for you if you:

whether you work full-time or on a regular basis,

you can’t take a break from your job to take a language course,

would like to learn German in the long term,

want to study regularly, but spend less time on it each week.

Intensive Course or Evening Course: Which Is a Better Fit?

Both types of courses have their advantages. The key factor isn’t just the price, but above all how well the German course fits your personal goals and schedule.

So compare these four points:

1. Time commitment per week

Realistically, how many hours can you set aside for your German course? An intensive course requires significantly more time than an evening course taken alongside work.

2. Time required to reach the desired language proficiency level

How quickly do you want or need to reach your goal? For example, if you want to reach the B1 or B2 level within a certain time frame, a more intensive learning approach might be a good idea.

3. Group Size

A small study group offers more opportunities to speak on your own and actively participate in class. Speaking regularly is especially important when learning German.

4. Plan the German course and exam together from the very beginning

Do you need a B1 or B2 certificate for your studies, career, residency, or other purposes? If so, you should incorporate the exam into your course schedule as early as possible.

When choosing a language school, make sure that the German course and language exam are offered by the same provider. This makes it easier to coordinate the course schedule with the exam date.

You should also find out well in advance which German language exam you need for your specific purpose. Not every exam is equally suitable for every purpose.

Free Placement Test

Not sure what your current German level is? Then a free German placement test is a good first step.

A reputable language school should first assess your current language proficiency. Based on that, it can advise you on which German course in Frankfurt best suits your current level and your learning goals.

Even better: Take advantage of the opportunity to take a trial class. That way, you can get to know the language school, the classes, and the study group before you make your decision.

Learn German in Frankfurt at inlingua

The telc German B2 exam is one of the most recognized German language certifications for advanced learners. It is accepted by many employers, universities, and government institutions as official proof of language proficiency. Whether you want to advance your career, pursue higher education, or improve your communication skills in Germany, a telc B2 certificate demonstrates a strong command of the German language.
The exam is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and certifies language skills at the B2 level.

Structure of the telc German B2 ExamWhat Does B2 Level Mean?

At the B2 level, you can communicate spontaneously and fluently in German. You are able to understand the main ideas of complex texts, express and justify your opinions, and communicate clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics. Conversations with native speakers are generally possible without significant difficulty.

Structure of the telc German B2 Exam

The telc B2 exam consists of a written and an oral section. It assesses all four language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

Written Examination

The written part includes the following sections:

1. Reading Comprehension and Language Elements

Reading and understanding various texts

Matching information

Solving multiple-choice tasks

Applying vocabulary and grammar knowledge

2. Listening Comprehension

Listening to conversations, interviews, or announcements

Identifying key information and details

3. Writing

Writing a formal email or letter

Requesting information or responding to a complaint

Presenting arguments in a clear and structured way

The written examination lasts approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the exam format. There is no break between the sections.

Oral Examination

The oral exam lasts about 15 minutes and is usually conducted together with another candidate. Before the exam, participants are given approximately 20 minutes of preparation time.

The oral examination consists of three parts:

Presenting a topic

Discussing the topic with a partner

Solving a problem or planning a task together

Assessment criteria include pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and the ability to interact effectively with others.

How Is the telc B2 Exam Graded?

To pass the exam, candidates must successfully complete both the written and oral sections. The exams are evaluated centrally by telc, and results are usually available within a few weeks.

Top Tips for Passing the telc B2 Exam

1. Familiarize Yourself with the Exam Format

Many mistakes are not caused by a lack of language skills but by unfamiliarity with the task types. Practice regularly with official mock exams and simulate real exam conditions whenever possible.

2. Improve Your Time Management

Time pressure is one of the biggest challenges, especially in the writing section. Practice completing tasks within the allotted time and leave a few minutes to review your work.
3. Read Regula

3. Read Regularly in German

Newspapers, blogs, magazines, and online articles help expand your vocabulary and improve reading comprehension. They also expose you to useful expressions and structures for the writing section.

4. Listen to Authentic German Content

Podcasts, news broadcasts, interviews, and videos are excellent preparation for the listening section. Try to expose yourself to different accents, speaking styles, and speeds.

5. Practice Writing Systematically

Writing is often one of the most challenging parts of the exam. Develop a clear structure with an introduction, main body, and conclusion. Using a logical format will help you communicate your ideas effectively and score higher.

6. Speak German as Often as Possible

Learning grammar alone is not enough for success in the oral exam. Regular conversations help improve fluency, confidence, and spontaneity. Discussions about current topics and role-playing activities are particularly useful.

7. Complete Several Mock Exams

Many successful candidates report that taking multiple full-length practice tests increased their confidence and reduced exam anxiety. The more familiar you are with the exam process, the more relaxed you will feel on test day.

Conclusion

In these professions, technical language is mandatory. For professional recognition, a language level of B2 or C1 is usually required, including a specialized language examination.
Do you want to study, work in Germany, or officially prove your language skills? Then the telc German C1 Exam is often the right choice. In this article, you will learn how the exam is structured, what you need it for – and why honesty is paramount.

What is the telc C1 exam good for?

The telc German C1 exam certifies advanced German language skills at a high level. It is suitable for, among others:

access to universities or colleges (for the telc C1 Hochschule variant)

academic and demanding professional activities

recognition in the medical and pharmaceutical fields (e.g., for doctors, pharmacists)

applications to German companies

personal or professional development

Note: The telc C1 Hochschule version is usually required for university studies – with a slightly modified exam format, but a similar level of difficulty.

How is the telc German C1 test structured?

As with B1, the exam consists of two main parts:

Written exam (3 hours)

Oral exam (approx. 16–20 minutes)

1. Written Exam

a) Reading comprehension & language building blocks (90 minutes)

Complex texts from newspapers, specialist articles, or commentaries

Tasks: multiple choice, matching questions, cloze tests

Language modules test your grammar, sentence structure, and idiomatic expressions

b) Listening comprehension (40 minutes)

Challenging audio texts: interviews, news reports, discussions

Task formats: multiple-choice questions, matching exercises, or filling in notes

c) Written expression (70 minutes)

You have to write a free text: statement, comment, or discussion

You must argue in a structured manner, formulate clearly, and write at a high linguistic level.

2. Oral Exam

The oral exam usually takes place in pairs or individually. Three typical tasks:

Presentation of a topic
(e.g., artificial intelligence, sustainability, education policy)

Discussion of the topic with your partner

Joint problem solving/argumentation
(e.g., selection of a project, discussion of advantages and disadvantages)

Argumentation, fluency, interaction, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are evaluated.

Important: No cheating during the exam!

In some cases, participants try to pass the exam by cheating, for example by:

pretending to be someone else (another person takes the exam)

using forged documents

cheating or communicating during the exam

Such attempts at deception are not a trivial offense. In Germany, they are considered document forgery or fraud—with serious consequences:

Immediate termination of the exam

No refund of the exam fee

Report to the police

Entry in the telc system – consequence: exclusion from future exams

Possible consequences for studies, work permit, or residence status

How to be honest—and successful

The C1 exam is challenging—but achievable with the right preparation. We recommend:

Regular reading (e.g., newspapers, technical texts)

Targeted exam training with mock tests

Oral practice in realistic exam situations

Tip: inlingua Frankfurt offers intensive telc C1 preparation courses—in small groups or individually. With experienced examiners, practice materials, and real exam feedback.

Conclusion

The telc C1 exam is the key to academic and professional opportunities in Germany. It shows that you can communicate at a high level – both in writing and orally.
Prepare yourself seriously and honestly – and secure a certificate you can be proud of!

Questions about registration or preparation?
The exam consists of two parts:

Talk about yourself (e.g., family, career, hobbies)

Plan something together (e.g., a trip or an event)

Discuss a topic or express an opinion

Comprehensibility, interaction, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar will be evaluated. Important: Be active and friendly during the conversation.

Important

Time and again, people try to cheat on telc exams—for example, by:

Deception with false identification (someone else comes to the exam)

Falsified attendance certificates or certificates

Collusion with other exam participants

This is not a trivial offense, but a criminal offense—and it has serious consequences:

Immediate exclusion from the exam

Loss of the exam fee

Reporting for document forgery or identity fraud

Entry in the telc exam system (future exams may be refused)

Possible effects on residence permits or naturalization procedures

Our advice: Prepare yourself honestly and purposefully. There are many good exam preparation courses available—including here at inlingua Frankfurt. That way, you can pass on your own—and feel good about it!

But what requirements must be met in order to be allowed to work here? We clarify – both for citizens from the EU/EEA area and for interested parties from third countries.

For EU/EEA Citizens (from the European Economic Area):

Good news: If you come from an EU member state, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, you do not need a work permit. You are free to stay and work in Germany. Nevertheless, it is worth registering with the Residents’ Registration Office and taking out German health insurance at an early stage.

For Third Countries (non-EU/EEA):

Anyone coming from a non-EU country generally needs a work visa or an EU Blue Card. Requirements include:

A specific job offer from a German employer

Important: The recognition of foreign qualifications may be required – for example, in the medical field.

Tip: Good language preparation (at least B1/B2) greatly increases your chances on the German labor market – we would be happy to advise you!

Anyone who lives permanently in Germany can apply for German citizenship under certain conditions. But what are these conditions? How does the process work, and how long does it take? Here we provide an overview.

What are the benefits of German citizenship?

With the German citizenship you get:

A German passport – with freedom to travel to over 190 countries

Full political rights – e.g., the right to vote in federal and state elections

Access to certain professions in the public sector

Legal certainty and equality with all other German citizens

Requirements for naturalization

The most important requirements are:

Legal, permanent residence in Germany usually for at least 5 years

in special cases (e.g., with very good integration) also possible earlier

Independent means of supporting yourself

You may not receive social assistance or citizen’s income (exceptions possible, e.g., for single parents)

Sufficient knowledge of German

at least level B1 according to CEFR (e.g., through a telc B1 certificate)

Passed naturalization test

Questions on politics, history, the Basic Law, rights, and obligations

There are exceptions, e.g., for EU citizens, refugees, or people from certain countries

Naturalization process – step by step

Consultation with the naturalization authority.

The city or district administration of your place of residence is responsible.

Submission of all documents, e.g.:

Identification documents, residence permit

Language certificate (e.g., telc B1)

Proof of naturalization test

Proof of income, rental agreement, etc.

Review by the authorities

The documents will be carefully reviewed – if there are any questions, a written request will be sent.

From this day forward, you are a German citizen.

How long does the process take?

Depending on the state and authority, the process currently takes (2025):

6 to 18 months, sometimes longer

Important: The more complete and earlier you submit all documents, the faster the process will be.

How can I prepare?

Attend a language course at level B1 – with a telc certificate upon completion

Prepare for the naturalization test: www.einbürgerungstest-online.de

Take advantage of counseling services – e.g., from Caritas, migration counseling centers, or your local government

Tip from inlingua Frankfurt:
We offer targeted preparation courses for telc B1 (also B2 and C1) with experienced trainers and compact exam knowledge.
