Language requirements for german proficiency in various industries
German language skills are essential in many professions – but how much and what specialized vocabulary do you really need? We provide an overview of language requirements in six industries:
1. Banking & Finance
Precise and formal German is required here. Terms such as “financing plan,” “creditworthiness,” or “balance sheet analysis” are part of daily work. A language level of B2 to C1 is often a prerequisite – especially for customer interaction.
2. Medicine & Care
In these professions, technical language is mandatory. For professional recognition, a language level of B2 or C1 is usually required, including a specialized language examination. Typical terms include “blood count,” “anamnesis,” or “treatment plan.”
3. Pharma & Research
Technical German dominates here, often combined with English. Confident communication at B2/C1 level, especially when writing reports or collaborating within a team, is crucial.
4. IT & Tech
Many companies accept English as the working language, but basic German skills (B1/B2) are helpful for meetings, internal communication, and daily life in Germany.
5. Hospitality & Hotels
Communication with guests is central here – a B1 level is sufficient in many cases, but should be solid. Friendly small talk and understanding customer needs are important.
6. Construction & Trades
Practical communication on construction sites usually requires an A2 to B1 level, supplemented by industry-specific vocabulary (“masonry,” “electrical circuit,” “building plan”).
Good to know: Inlingua Frankfurt offers industry-specific language courses for many of these areas – individually or in small groups.
